Scott Cooper's true crime movie 'Black Mass' on TV tonight

 


The famous crime movie Black Mass from director Scott Cooper airs tonight on the Paramount Network. The film, starring Johnny Depp , Joel Edgerton and Benedict Cumberbatch , among others, was released on the silver screen in 2015.

In Black Mass we are taken to Boston in the 1970s. While his brother Bill holds a high position in the Senate of Massachusetts, we see how the Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger continues to expand his underworld empire there. 

FBI agent John Connolly convinces Whitey to help the agency fight the Italian mafia. As their corrupt collaboration continues to escalate, Bulger increases his power and manages to stay out of prison. This enables him to become one of the most dangerous gangsters in American history.

Black Mass

Black Mass is the work of American director Scott Cooper, who you might also know from titles like Out of the Furnace , Crazy Heart and Hostiles . The story is based on the eponymous Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Gerard O'Neill' and appeared on the silver screen in 2015. 

The film features Joel Edgerton and Benedict Cumberbatch, among others, and shows us an almost unrecognizable Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger. When the film hit the silver screen six years ago, it was warmly received by critics, who rate the title with a 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes. 

The general public was slightly less enthusiastic, reaching a 6.9 on IMDb and a 3.25 out of 5 on MovieMeter.
